However, most of these aren’t desktop applications you install: they’re hosted online. This approach brings with it some pros and cons. On the upside, not only won’t you need to install these web applications; you don’t need to care about getting the latest software patch, either. Also, as is the case with most of Google’s web apps, they’re free to use (as they’re partly ad-financed). And these online tools are very collaborative in nature—instead of editing the Word file all on your own, Google Docs allows you to edit along with others, simultaneously. And when you’re finished creating a document, you won’t save it locally to send out the attachment, but instead can simply point someone to the URL of where your document is hosted.

There are some downsides too. Microsoft (among others who provide office suites), although not a leader in searching, has immense experience in desktop applications. Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and others are featurerich, and thanks to the advanced desktop model, the interface can support many tricks and niceties that are still hard to emulate in the browser.

Google can certainly be expected to expand their tools over time. But today, almost universally across applications, Microsoft Office wins when it comes to the sheer quantity of features.

And that’s where this book comes in. There’s a long tradition in computing that when there’s a missing feature, you apply a hack to make the program do what you want. After all, software—the desktop model, or the new online model—is supposed to do the work for you, not the other way round.

In Google Apps Hacks, we’ll be presenting you with a wide array of hacks that guide you through getting more out of this new application suite. From easier workarounds (how do I attach a Google document to an email?), to more advanced tips (how do I skin my Gmail client?), to programming guides (how do I use the importXml function in my spreadsheet?). This book is the fourth and final volume in a four-volume set that attempts to summarize the commands and concepts that you need to know in order to pass one of the CCNP certification exams—in this case, the Optimizing Converged Cisco Networks (ONT) exam. Of course, it’s not quite that simple or you could just buy one of the ancient tomes on DOS to find your way around. All of the features you expect from Windows Server still appear in Windows Server 2008 Server Core—the only difference is that you must use the command prompt to manage them, which means using a different administration method than you probably use today.

Eliminating the graphical user interface (GUI) has certain security benefits. It’s a lot harder to infect a machine that lacks a browser such as Internet Explorer. In fact, it’s not too hard to imagine that infecting such a system from the inside would be very difficult indeed. In addition, using a command line interface can be faster than using the GUI once you have some basic management tools in place. Of course, not having the GUI tools also presents a number of problems. Many administrators have never worked at the command line so they don’t have the skills required to manage a server that has only a command prompt for input.

Langford’s Advanced Photography, seventh edition, approaches the science and technology behind photography and relates it to practical issues. The first release of Mac OS X was a giant leap forward for the Mac platform. Its innovations in basic architecture, the way it works, and even its user interface made Mac OS X the most significant event for Mac users since the first Mac was introduced back in the Jurassic period, circa 1984. Mac OS X was more stable, more powerful, and even more beautiful than any previous version. However, the first version of Mac OS X had some rough spots, not surprising at all because it was the first release of a brand-new OS (despite the version number implying it was the successor to Mac OS 9).

About a year later, version 10.2 was released. This release smoothed many of the rough edges left over from version 10.1 and added many new features. Due to some fundamental improvements in the core operating system, version 10.2 caused some ripples in the Mac universe because many applications had to be updated to run under that version.

Version 10.3 began to show the maturity of Mac OS X’s more than two years of life. Version 10.3 continued the process of refining the OS along with adding some excellent new features, such as a totally redesigned Finder, Expose, improved applications, and so on. It also continued to improve the stability and performance of the OS. Much of the foundation work for the OS was accomplished by the previous two releases; version 10.3 was less disruptive than the previous releases while continuing to make major improvements in functionality, reliability, and performance.

Version 10.4 was less of a change than previous releases of Mac OS X were. This was good news because it meant that the core OS functionality has stabilized, and transitions to each subsequent version will have lots of benefits with less pain. While it was less disruptive than previous releases, new features abounded, such as the Dashboard and widgets, which provide instant access to accessory applications; the Spotlight, which enables you to quickly search your Mac for information of all kinds at the same time, and so on.

Now, version 10.5 continues to refine the OS while adding totally new features. For example, the new Time Machine application enables you to perform one of the most critical tasks (seldom done by most Mac users) that of backing up your data. Other areas have continued to improve such as new Finder functionality for the desktop and the cool web widget creation tool that enables you to capture parts of web pages as widgets on your Dashboard.

Of course, if you are new to the Mac or have never used Mac OS X before, all the previous versions don’t matter. You get to enjoy the results of Mac OS X’s evolution without having been through the growth process.

Mac OS X is a very powerful and feature-rich OS. Although many of the features of the OS are intuitive, some might not be obvious to you. And because of the amazing number of powerful applications that are part of the standard Mac OS X installation, such as Safari,iTunes, and many others, using Mac OS X effectively is much more than just manipulating the Finder and using the Dock. That is where this book comes in.

The field of Network and System Administration is (some would claim) still an emerging field, one that bridges disciplines, and challenges the traditional boundaries of computer science. It forces us to confront issues like partial predictability and partial reliability that are more commonly associated with engineering disciplines in an uncertain environment. It does so because human–computer networks are complex and uncertain environments.
In other words, it rediscovers the lesson that other sciences have already made peace with: hat approximation is the only realistic approach to its difficulties.

Whatever the novelty of the field, there is already a large body of knowledge about it, contained in a diverse array of sources. This has only recently begun to be formalized however, in the way we conventionally expect of an academic discipline. Much of it has been only sketchily formulated and does not lend itself to future development by researchers and designers. We hope to partially rectify that situation with this volume.

So what is administration or management? This is a difficult question to answer in full, but it clearly covers few themes:
• Making choices and decisions about design, implementation, practice and operations.
• Provision of resources.
• Infrastructure and service design.
• Maintenance and change management.
• Verification and validation of specifications.
• Economic usage and business integration.
Within the list above, we also find the foundations for more abstract concerns like security and commerce. We have not been able to cover every aspect of the field in this book, but we have hopefully covered enough to take us forward.

Our Handbook of Network and System Administration is not a textbook for day-to-day practitioners. It is aimed at those who are seeking to move beyond recipies and principles, on to creative innovation in application, development or research; it offers a solid scientific and engineering foundation for the field. We hope that it will also inspire less experienced readers. For them we recommend a background for this volume in a number of recent textbooks:
• For a technical introduction to the principles and techniques of system administration
one has Principles of Network and System Administration, Mark Burgess. Wiley (2000,2004).
• An introduction to the heuristics and day to day practices of system administration is found in The Practice of System and Network Administration, T.A. Limoncelli and C. Hogan. Addison Wesley (2002).
• Advanced matters of modelling and in-depth understanding of systems can be found in Analytical Network and System Administration, Mark Burgess. Wiley (2004).

In addition to this educationally honed sequence, there are numerous resources on specific technologies, for instance in the ‘animal series’ of books by the publisher O’Reilly. If we add to the above a book of collected papers, which documents the early work in system administration,
• Selected Papers in Network and System Administration, Erik Anderson, Mark Burgess and Alva Couch, Eds. Wiley (2001). and a book of chapters on the early parts of Network Management

An editor quickly discovers that soliciting contributions is harder than one might think. Shamelessly appealing to the vanity of contributors only goes so far in coaxing words onto pages. Those who have practiced network and system management, in particular, rarely like to write down their knowledge. This has made our volume end up being more forwardlooking than historical, although we have succeeded in covering a few examples of classic materials, such as E-mail and backup. It has left us to try to mention the omissions in our commentary, with obvious limitations. Fortunately many traditional topics are already discussed in the books above.

Our book is already quite thick, so let us not prolong the introduction unnecessarily. We simply invite you to read the chapters and we offer some brief commentary along the way.

This is easier said than done, because to use JSP and JSF, you need to know at least some Java, HTML, XML, and SQL. Moreover, some knowledge of JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) would also be useful, and you couldn’t fully exploit the power of JSP/JSF without knowing the JSP Expression Language (EL) and the XPath language.

To cover all this ground, we’ve decided to relegate most of the details to appendixes and use the main body of the book to teach you key concepts and components with as little clutter as possible.

Chapter 1 introduces you to JSP, describes the general structure of JSP applications, and explains the full code of your first JSP application. At the end of the chapter, we also tell you how to install the application in Tomcat. We knew that you would be eager to see something working, and we didn’t want to make you wait for it!

Chapter 2 is where we cover all aspects and components of JSP. After giving you a brief summary of the Java syntax, we introduce the online bookshop application that we’ll use as an example in several chapters. We then explain how to use JSP variables, directives, and standard actions, how to create your own custom actions, and how to use JSTL and EL. Finally, we briefly describe how to write JSP documents in XML syntax.

Broadband wireless access technical solutions and products have beenavailable for some time. These technologies have primarily focused on providing high data rate connectivity wirelessly between fixed stationary sites. These technical solutions are proprietary in nature and suffer from poor interoperability with other broadband wireless access products and have a high cost due to the lack of economy of scale. High-speed wireless services have already achieved great success in local area networks with the IEEE 802.11 standard andWi-Fi certified products.

The IEEE 802.16 BWA technology family, referred to as Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access intends to provide a standardized BWA solution. The IEEE Standards Board established the IEEE 802.16 working group in 1999 to prepare formal specifications for global deployment of broadband Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks, officially called WirelessMAN. Was it worth the wait?
The short answer is, “Yes.” We believe Vista is a major advance on Microsoft’s previous operating systems. If you’re buying a new PC today, we don’t hesitate to recommend that you get Vista rather than requesting XP or another, older operating system. (If you’re upgrading an older PC to Vista, by contrast, be sure to first read our tips in Chapter 3.)

In 2001, Microsoft executives widely claimed that XP was “the most secure operating system we have ever delivered.” In fact, XP and its new Web browser, Internet Explorer 6.0, were full of maddening security holes that previous operating systems didn’t suffer from. ActiveX exploits, drive-by downloads, and many other kinds of weaknesses were quickly exploited by black-hat hackers. Microsoft has been issuing patches for XP and IE 6.0 ever since.

The Vista OS and the new IE 7.0 browser are welcome steps toward changing that. Will they never need patching? We’d hardly say that. The rapid increase of user demands for faster connection to the Internet service has spurred broadband access network technologies advancement over recent years. While backbone networks have matured and are reliable with large bandwidth, the “last mile’’ remains the bottleneck to enable broadband applications. The driving force behind the development of theWiMAXsystem has been the desire to satisfy the emerging need for high data rate applications such as voice over IP, video conferencing, interactive gaming, and multimedia streaming. IEEE 802.11-based Wi-Fi networks have been widely deployed in hotspots, offices, campus, and airports to provide ubiquitous wireless coverage. However, this standard is handicapped by its short transmission range, bandwidth, quality of service, and security. WiMAX will resolve the “lastmile’’ problem in conjunction with IEEE 802.11. WiMAX deployments not only serve residential and enterprise users but may also be deployed as a backhaul forWi-Fi hotspots or 3G cellular towers.

WiMAX is based on the IEEE 802.16 air interface standard suite, which provides he wireless technology for nomadic and mobile data access. The IEEE 02.16-2004 standard is designed for stationary transmission, and the 802.16e mendment deals with both stationary and mobile transmissions. WiMAX mploys orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, and supports adaptive odulation and coding depending on the channel conditions. Wireless ystems cover large geographic areas without the need for a costly cable nfrastructure to each service access point. WiMAX offers cost-effective and uickly deployable alternative to cabled networks such as fiber-optic links, raditional cable or digital subscriber lines, or T1 networks.

WiMAX offers fast deployment and a cost-effective solution to the last-mile wireless connection problem in metropolitan areas and underserved rural reas. For mass adoption and large-scale deployment of a broadband wireless access system, it must support quality of service (QoS) for real-time and highbandwidth pplications. The IEEE 802.16 standard is a QoS-rich platform. Different access methods are supported for different classes of traffic. Best effort traffic is one of the most important of these classes as it represents he majority of the overall data traffic. WiMAX employs a reservation-based MAC technology. Reservation-based MAC protocols have been a primary access method for broadband access technologies. For example, the General Packet Radio System, Digital Subscriber Line DSL, and Hybrid Fiber Coaxial HFC cable technologies employ reservation-based multiple access systems.

Broadband wireless access is as important as waterways, railroads, and interstate highways of an earlier era. Broadband wireless access technical solutions and products have been available for some time. These technologies have primarily focused on providing high data rate connectivity wirelessly between fixed stationary sites. Munich-based computer book publishers Addison-Wesley have decided to make their author Hagen Graf’s bestselling book on Joomla! 1.0 avalaible for free download. The PDF is fully functional, i.e. printable.
While Joomla! is steadily moving towards the 1.5 release, version 1.0 is still famous with many users and - until 1.5 publishes - the only recommended choice for new installations. It was the book’s author Hagen Graf himself who suggested to offer the content for free download. His editor Boris Karnikowski, responsible of Addison-Wesley’s open source book program, did not need to be convinced. “The big success of Hagen Graf’s book on version 1.0 allows us to publish up to date editions like the one on 1.5 we are currently selling”, he says. “But because the computer book market is very much driven by version numbers & cues, version 1.0 content now may seem obsolete to many book sellers - while it certainly is not.
